C# Gains Most in Programming Language Popularity Index

Microsoft's C# programming language posted the largest 12-month gain in popularity, says the TIOBE Index for May 2022.

After making a charge to contend for TIOBE's "Programming Language of the Year" award last December, C# ultimately failed, coming in second to Python.

But now the surge continues, with the May 2022 report noting C# outgained other languages "by far" from May 2021.

"Its rankings has increased almost 2 percent for the last 12 months," TIOBE said. "C# is one of the most mature programming languages in existence, supporting many modern programming paradigms. Until recently, its only disadvantage was that its Linux support was questionable, but this is changing rapidly the last couple of years. So chances are high that C# might enter the TIOBE index top 3 by replacing C."

Indeed, regarding the "changing rapidly" Linux claim, Microsoft guidance posted just last month details how to "Install .NET on Linux distributions." Full Linux support is still not there yet, however, as Microsoft also notes that "Visual Studio 2022 enables you to build and debug apps for Linux using C++, Python, and Node.js." Developers can jump through a few hoops to use MonoDevelop and Visual Studio Code for C# Linux programming.

Despite C#'s leading 12-month percentage rise in the May 2022 TIOBE Index, C# stayed in its No. 5 slot, with the only changes among the top 10 being Python overtaking C for the top spot, and SQL passing PHP to go from tenth to ninth place.

The TIOBE Index ranking is based search engine results that measure the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses and third-party vendors in order to determine languages in which the most lines of code are written.
