Serena Adds DevOps to Orchestrated IT Solution
Serena Software recently updated its Orchestrated IT solution, which facilitates the application and service delivery lifecycle, to include improved change and release management features. The new capabilities are geared toward shops using the DevOps method of software development. DevOps promotes close collaboration between the development and operations teams, resulting in faster change and release cadences -- a key focus of the updated Orchestrated IT product.
In an interview, Serena Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing David Hurwitz noted that more dev companies are creating "revenue apps," which are "software applications that directly transact customer activity and bring in considerable revenue," according to an Orchestrated IT 4.5 press release. Hurwitz explained that revenue apps are characterized by frequent updates driven by market expectations for constantly improving products. He noted that the new Orchestrated IT 4.5 capabilities are "aimed at externally facing, competing-in-the-market IT," and that they provide developers with tools to keep pace with the demands of consumers. Orchestrated IT is a unique product because it combines "process orchestration with release automation," Hurwitz said.
The improvements in Orchestrated IT 4.5 include "a series of enhancements that provide developers with self-service provisioning of environments, more cloud and virtualized infrastructure deployments targets, [and] improved resource management and demand planning," according to the press release.
The new self-service component is an on-demand portal that allows developers to quickly create dev and testing environments. Expanded deployment target environments include Windows Azure, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and VMware ESX/ESXi. The Serena Release Automation component of Orchestrated IT has been updated with improved load-balancing and failover features. Additionally, the change request process has been simplified with improved request tracking and "low-impact capture and roll-up of the time spent on change request activities, [which] allows accurate assessment of the resources utilized by a project," according to the Serena press release.
Serena Orchestrated IT version 4.5 will be generally available on May 15, with pricing starting at $12,500 for 250 users. Some components of the product can be explored in free trial versions.
