Linux Coding Extension Available for Visual C++

Write code destined for Linux servers, desktops and devices right from the Visual C++ as if it were native code.

Visual C++ developers can now write code destined for Linux servers, desktops and devices right from the Visual C++ IDE. The capability is provided through a new extension that was released at the end of March.

With the extension, developers can also manage connections from those targets all from within VS. "VS will automatically copy and remote build your sources and can launch your application with the debugger," writes Microsoft's Marc Goodner, in a blog post. "Our project system supports targeting specific architectures, including ARM."

Goodner says the extension comes with some caveats: "Today we only support building remotely on the Linux target machine. We are not limited by specific Linux distros but we do have dependencies on the presence of some tools. Specifically, we need openssh-server, g++, gdb and gdbserver."

In the post, Goodner walks through a typical installation process and creation of a Console app and desktop app, as well as the creation of a project targeting a Raspberry Pi.
