Visual Studio 2022 17.8 Preview 3 Adds Update Notification

Microsoft focused on improving stability and reliability while also introducing a few new features in the just-released Visual Studio 2022 17.8 Preview 3.

While it's short on major new features, the dev team did resolve dozens of tickets submitted by users to the Developer Community feedback/feature request site.

As far as new features, the few highlighted in an Oct. 10 announcement include:

  • Visual Studio Update Notification: an overlay to the VS task bar icon to indicate when the IDE will update, appearing when an update is available and the user has enabled its "Update on Close "option.

  • Unreal Engine Macro Specifier Suggestions: a feature that suggests Unreal Engine macro specifiers in the member list, helping C++ game devs more easily understand and use them.
  • Structured Diagnostics: a new Problem Details window allows those same game devs to navigate compiler errors in a structured way, with nested information and details.

  • SQL Server Data Tools Upgrade: an upgrade from Microsoft.Data.SQLClient (MDS) 3.0 to MDS 5.0, which has added support for TDS 8.0, Server SPN and Failover Server SPN, and more.

Microsoft also yesterday shipped the final release candidates for .NET 8 and its associated components. .NET MAUI, ASP.NET Core and EF8.
