MarkLogic Server 4.0 Taps XML Content

Mark Logic releases MarkLogic Server 4.0, with added support for geospatial data, dynamic content and entity enrichment.

XML content-server vendor Mark Logic Corp. last month released a repository that enables organizations to store, leverage, manipulate and deliver structured and unstructured XML-based data and content.

MarkLogic Server 4.0 adds support for geospatial data for location-based applications, customizable alerting for pushing dynamic content to users based on rules and filters, and entity enrichment to enable more effective and flexible search and navigation of XML content.

"We were designed specifically for handling XML and we have significant advantages there," says John Kreisa, director of product marketing for Mark Logic.

Geospatial Developments
Geospatial support, for instance, allows developers to craft location-aware applications, such as a medical report that visually depicts where specific symptoms are being found. Developers should find the geospatial support is particularly compelling, says IDC analyst Melissa Webster.

"So many applications have a geospatial aspect, whether it's regionally specific publishing, or mashups that tie information to coordinates, or mobile applications that need to surface information that's relevant to someone's current location," says Webster in an e-mail.

Webster also singles out entity enrichment, which she says can empower queries by letting dev shops know more about their content and the specific elements in it. The capability enables MarkLogic Server to detect intersections of XML-based data and content across 18 different entity types.

Growing User Base
Kreisa says the new features and widening adoption of XML are expanding adoption of MarkLogic Server beyond the company's traditional government and publishing sectors.

MarkLogic Server can integrate with SharePoint server to manipulate XML-based file formats, adds Kreisa. He says companies using SharePoint for document-management services and workflow can deploy MarkLogic Server to enable dynamic reuse of XML-based content.

MarkLogic Server 4.0 now includes support for the W3C-endorsed XQuery 1.0 query language, which provides a common way for systems to manipulate XML-based data. The product provides for MarkLogic-specific XQuery extensions, which add error handling and other capabilities, and a mode for preserving backward compatibility with existing MarkLogic code.
