There are many ways to beef up your software development skills. The most effective way is to build a bunch of stuff yourself and learn by making mistakes.

A second way is to turn to informational sources and see how other folks do it. This magazine falls into that category, as does MSDN Magazine and others in this space.

A third way is to go to technical conferences, where you can see real-life examples of how to build solutions from industry experts. Another advantage of a tech show is that you get to interact with those gurus in ways not normally available.

This feature package is sort of a cross between the second and third learning methods. We're presenting three different feature stories written by the same experts you'll find at our upcoming technical conference, called Live! 360. Live! 360 is actually a combination of multiple technical conferences, including content focused on SharePoint, SQL, and cloud and virtualization development.

The articles you'll find in this section are similar to sessions each author and speaker will be presenting at Live! 360, so if a topic intrigues you, look at this as a sneak preview of what you'll get at the show. The articles here focus on Visual Studio 2012 and the benefits it has for developers in the areas of automated lifecycle management (ALM), load testing and UI development.

As you probably know, Visual Studio 2012 is a significantly different Visual Studio, with tons of new capabilities for traditional and mobile-focused developers. The content at the upcoming show reflects this new, Windows 8-based reality as well, so this issue -- and the conference, if you can attend -- will get you up to speed quickly on the latest and greatest Microsoft products.
