Security Tightened in SQL Server Data Tools Update

Database schema comparisons, security among incremental updates made to this July 2014 release of SSDT.

The Microsoft SQL Server team has made incremental updates to SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), updating the Schema Compare utility, improving Microsoft Azure SQL Database security and supporting Parallel Data Warehouse. The July 2014 release is available from the Data Developer Center.

Schema Compare, a utility used for comparing data definitions between connected databases, has been updated so that it now can be used natively within MSBuild, the Visual Studio build platform. Schema Compare output within build can be output via text or XML. A more detailed description of the integration of Schema Compare in MSBuild is in this blog post.

Improvements were also made to the Microsoft Azure SQL Database node, with the addition of Visual Studio 2012 support, as well as a new security feature that allows use of token-based authentication via a Microsoft account or OrgID.

For those using SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) appliances, SSDT also adds support for PDW tooling in Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop. PDW appliances have been updated to support Visual Studio versions 2012 and 2013.

Dr. James McCaffrey from Microsoft Research presents a complete end-to-end demonstration of the naive Bayes regression technique, where the goal is to predict a single numeric value. Compared to other machine learning regression techniques, naive Bayes regression is usually less accurate, but is simple, easy to implement and customize, works on both large and small datasets, is highly interpretable, and doesn't require tuning any hyperparameters.
