Windows Phone SDK 8.1 Update Adds Emulators for VS 2013 U2

In related news, also released is another CTP for an extension for developing apps with the Apache Cordova platform.

Windows Phone SDK 8.1 Update has been updated with quite a number of new emulators, which can be used when developing apps that run on Windows Phone 8.1 Update using Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 or newer. The release is part of the tooling that was released in conjunction with Visual Studio 2013 Update 3.

Here's the list of Windows Phone Emulator 8.1 images that have been added to this release:

  • WVGA 4 inch
  • WVGA 4 inch 512MB
  • WXGA 4.5 inch
  • 720p 4.7 inch
  • 1080p 5.5 inch
  • 1080p 6 inch

In related news, Microsoft also released the Extension for Multi-Hybrid App Development CTP 2, used for developing smartphone apps using the Apache Cordova framework.

Apache Cordova is an open source set of device APIs that mobile developers can use to gain native access to phone resources via JavaScript. It can be used to write to iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Palm WebOS, Bada and Symbian phone OSes.

This version of the Extension for Multi-Hybrid App Development adds quite a few new features for testing:

  • Backward compatibility to Windows 7 phones
  • Stepped installation and configuration of phone development environment
  • Debugging of Android apps running versions 2.3 to 4.4

This version also rolls up about 300 bug fixes and improved error messages.
