Microsoft Previews Copilot AI for Open-Source Eclipse IDE
Catering to Java jockeys, Microsoft is yet again expanding the sprawling reach of its Copilot-branded AI assistants, previewing a coding tool for the open-source Eclipse IDE.
"We are excited to announce the Public Preview of GitHub Copilot for Eclipse," Microsoft announced on Feb 12. "As part of the broader GitHub Copilot family, which enhances productivity in various IDEs, this latest integration ensures that developers using Eclipse can benefit from AI-assisted coding like never before."
Eclipse is a popular open-source integrated IDE primarily used for Java development, though it supports multiple programming languages. It is developed and maintained by the Eclipse Foundation.
Microsoft's new tool provides the usual AI assistance including: code completions on the fly; the ability for developers to accept, discard or trigger suggestions; the ability to accept next-word suggestions, or "word by word" completions; and more. While code completions are in public preview, Chat is not yet available.
