C# Rises in Job Candidate Sought-After Tech Report

Technical recruiting firm Built In published a report on what developer tech that job candidates are looking for, finding that C# had the biggest year-over-year increase from 2019 to 2020.

The report is based on the search behavior of visitors to the company's web site, covering seven technology hubs, including Austin, Boston, Seattle and more.

Aggregating the data provides nationwide rankings of the most in-demand technologies, the company said. In that ranking, Microsoft's C# shines.

"Python has been the most in-demand technology two years in a row," the company said in a news release. "C# saw the biggest increase year over year. It ranked the ninth most popular technology in 2019 and the fifth in 2020."

As far as individual rankings for those aforementioned tech hubs, C# was all over the map, ranking No. 1 in Seattle but No. 10 in Los Angeles, for example.

Meanwhile, the other tech of most interest to Visual Studio Magazine readers, Microsoft's .NET, stayed the same at No. 7.

While C# was the biggest riser nationwide, C++ fell the most, falling off the top 10 list after placing sixth in 2019. Python ranked No. 1 for both years.

As with nearly every aspect of life, the COVID-19 pandemic figures prominently in the report, which measured 10 different metrics ranging from remote work to time off to company equity. For example, that first item, remote work, rose from the third most sought-after benefit in 2019 to the first in 2020. Likewise, relocation assistance climbed from the ninth most-desired benefit in 2019 to the sixth spot in 2020.

"As people adapted to life during COVID, candidates began opting for more quality-of-life benefits, and these reports bear that out," the company said.
