VS 2022 17.4 Preview 4 Features .NET MAUI with .NET 7 Release Candidate 2

Microsoft yesterday shipped Visual Studio 17.4 Preview 4 with production-ready code for .NET Multi-platform App UI (.NET MAUI) with .NET 7 Release Candidate 2.

According to the release notes, VS 2022 17.4 Preview 4 mostly fixes bugs and adds minor enhancements, though one item listed for it is "Update .NET MAUI to NET7 RC2."

.NET MAUI is Microsoft's evolution of Xamarin.Forms, adding desktop app support in addition to traditional iOS and Android mobile app targets. It was the final puzzle piece of the company's grand vision to unify its disparate dev products under one .NET umbrella that can be used by developers to build all types of apps -- desktop, mobile, web and more -- on the same Base Class Library (BCL), runtime and compilers.

Microsoft last week announced support for two Apple products, the Xcode 14 IDE and the latest edition of its mobile operating system, iOS 16.

And yesterday, Microsoft's David Ortinau announced that the new .NET MAUI and .NET 7 RC2 bits were available in VS 2022 v17.4 Preview 4. .NET 7 RC2 shipped last week, one month before reaching General Availability status.

"The primary themes of RC2 are quality and .NET support for Xcode 14 with iOS 16," Ortinau said.

Also, in some related news, he said, "new libraries have also shipped for MSAL.NET and App Center (Preview). These are both key libraries that .NET MAUI developers have been asking for. MSAL.NET is essential when using Azure Active Directory and the Microsoft identity platform for authentication. App Center provides services for app diagnostics and analytics."

Here is Microsoft's summary of what's new in VS 2022 v17.4 Preview 4:

  • Added support to for pattern in pattern matcher to handle suffix-less vectors.
  • Added the oneTBB version info to tbbmalloc.dll
  • Changed internal data structure access method so that this crash will not happen again.
  • Fixed numerous issues with modules where mixing header files and modules would issue bogus errors and/or incorrectly merge declarations.
  • Corrected a regression where forward-declaring an enumeration without a fixed underlying type after it is defined could cause an incorrect underlying type to be deduced.
  • Added a new conformance switch /Zc:enumTypes[-] to control Standard-conforming behavior for the deduced underlying types of some enumerations and enumerators. This is no longer enabled by default under /permissive- to avoid potential binary compatibility issues.
  • Fixed a bug where out variables of ref struct type would have an excessively wide escape scope, resulting in a compilation error at the call site where the out variable is declared.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Visual Studio to sometimes block stepping while debugging WPF applications. VS reported that changes were made that prevent the debugging session from continuing.
  • Fix for Visual Studio UI delay in Windows Forms .NET designer load and reload scenarios.
  • Update .NET MAUI to NET7 RC2
  • Adds support for Xcode 14.0 to .NET 7 for iOS/tvOS
  • Fixes a bug where the "Apply filter" dialog was not working correctly for MSA accounts.
  • Fixed an issue with the .NET Instrumentation tool could show frames taking greater than 100 percent of time
  • Under some circumstances, the SKU of the App Service created for an Azure Functions app that targets an App Service plan in an incorrect SKU.
