VisualStudioMagazine: What inspired you to present a session on this topic?
Alvarez: I wanted to present on Azure Arc for SQL Server because so many organizations struggle to manage SQL across on-prem, cloud, and hybrid environments. Arc solves that by bringing cloud agility, security, and unified management to wherever SQL lives. It's a practical tool that bridges today's biggest gap, and that's what inspired me to share it.

Instead of juggling different tools, Arc centralizes policies, security updates, monitoring, and backups. It also enables cloud innovations--like automated HA/DR, scaling, and compliance checks--to run on your existing SQL workloads without forcing a full migration.
What's one feature in Azure Arc that DBAs should explore first?
The first feature DBAs should explore in Azure Arc is policy-based management. It lets them apply consistent rules for security, backups, and compliance across every SQL instance--on-prem, in Azure, or other clouds--right from one place. It's the quickest way to see value without a steep learning curve.

What does the learning curve look like for teams coming from traditional SQL Server management?
For teams used to traditional SQL Server management, the Azure Arc learning curve is pretty smooth. The core SQL skills don't change--you're still managing instances, backups, security, and performance. What's new is the cloud-based control plane: using Azure Portal, Azure Policy, and sometimes ARM templates or PowerShell for automation.
Most DBAs pick up Arc quickly because it builds on what they already know; the main adjustment is thinking in terms of centralized, policy-driven management instead of managing servers one by one. Once they grasp that shift, adoption tends to move fast.
