Telerik Targets Mobile Biz Apps with New Xamarin Theme, DataGrid

The new Telerik R3 2017 release from Progress Software Corp., a .NET development tools specialist, aims to beef up line-of-business mobile apps with a new Telerik UI theme for its Xamarin offering, along with a preview of a DataGrid component.

The enhanced Xamarin tooling leads a host of improvements to the overall platform portfolio, which includes separate UI offerings for Xamarin and other targets, such as Universal Windows Platform, ASP.NET, desktop apps and so on.

In a blog post last week, the company called out the new mobile functionality for special consideration, introducing the first Telerik theme for its new UI for Xamarin offering and a community technology preview (CTP) of a new DataGrid component.

"This theme will bring a consistent look and feel to the Telerik components on the Android, iOS and Windows platforms," Progress said. "It provides the functionality to change the predefined brushes and customize it as needed."

As for the DataGrid CTP, the company said it first asked the developer community if such a component was needed for mobile scenarios, and proceeded to develop the preview based on affirmative feedback.

"With the release of the CTP of the DataGrid, we can't wait to put it in your hands and start getting your feedback on it," the company said. "We know there are still some rough edges and we will be working on performance boosts as well as plenty of additional features."

With the preview featuring tabular representation, databinding, built-in CRUD operations and more, future plans include performance improvements, Frozen Columns, Row Headers, Async Loading and Aggregates, along with more customization capabilities.

Progress also announced many other improvements to its mobile tooling and the overall platform portfolio, which now supports ASP.NET Core 2.0 and adds components for WPF, WinForms, its Kendo UI and many more.

More information can be found in the company's "what's new" guidance.
