Red Hat Announces .NET Core 2.1 for Linux, OpenShift
Red Hat announced the general availability of .NET Core 2.1 for its Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift container platforms.
While .NET Core is a modular, open source, cross-platform (Windows, Linux and macOS) .NET implementation for creating console, Web and other apps, the Red Had version focuses on microservice and container projects. Its .NET Core 2.1 efforts primarily target enterprise Linux (RHEL) and OpenShift, the company's Kubernetes container application platform .
In its Red Hat Container Catalog, the company recently launched several offerings targeting the new v2.1 release of .NET Core, including:
- .NET Core 2.1 on RHEL, an SDK with runtime and command-line tools for creating .NET Core applications on RHEL
- .NET Core 2.1 Runtime on RHEL, the primary .NET Core on RHEL image that can be used as-is to run .NET Core on RHEL, or alternatively used as a base image to build out containerized .NET Core applications
- .NET Core 2.1 Jenkins Slave on RHEL, a "Jenkins slave dotnet image [that] has the dotnet tools on top of the Jenkins slave base image"
Red Hat's .NET Core 2.1 is also available through its traditional "yum" installer.
Red Hat has published product documentation for .NET Core 2.1 and a Getting Started guide to add to its other guidance, including blogs and a technology overview page (still referencing .NET Core 2.0).
"With .NET Core you have the flexibility of building and deploying applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux or in containers," the company said in a blog post last week. "Your container-based applications and microservices can easily be deployed to your choice of public or private clouds using Red Hat OpenShift. All of the features of OpenShift and Kubernetes for cloud deployments are available to you."
Red Hat said developers can use .NET Core 2.1 to develop and deploy applications on:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host
- Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform
- Red Hat OpenShift Online
- Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated
- Red Hat OpenStack Platform
