SQL Server has proven itself to be an enterprise-ready database system. Enterprise systems, however, can be extremely complex, especially when it comes to effective physical architecture designs, scalable resource management, and problem solving. Serious SQL Server users must have access to the best sources of knowledge and experience available. Without a doubt, Ken Henderson's The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Architecture and Internals is one of those sources.

Henderson breaks the book down into four sections. The first section provides a necessary explanation of the platform that SQL Server runs on. It discusses essential Windows concepts such as processor modes, processes and threads, COM, XML, and fundamentals of memory, I/O, and networking. The second part of the book begins to dissect the core of SQL Server, providing you insight into SQL memory management, transactional support, cursors, and query processors. Henderson covers data services, such as SQLXML, notification services, DTS, and replication, in the third section. Finally, the fourth section takes you where few can—into the undocumented features of SQL Server. The 45 exercises and detailed technical explanations enhanced with more than 900 code examples (written in C++ and T-SQL and included on the accompanying CD) also add to this more than 1,000-page reference guide.

This book's strength is in its detail and quality of its explanations. This book is not well suited for those in the beginning stages of learning SQL Server, but it is an extremely valuable reference manual for those who need information far beyond the product's base documentation.
