VS 2022 for Mac Preview 8 Tackles Top Issues, Quality

Microsoft's Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 8 is out with the dev team addressing top feedback issues as part of a huge effort to revamp the IDE and provide quality equal to its Windows counterpart, which debuted last November.

The dev team has wrestled with performance and reliability problems with the IDE dating back to 2018 when VS 2019 for Mac underwent a reliability revamp prompted by much negative feedback about basic functionality. That revamp included replacing most of the editor internals with code from the Visual Studio for Windows IDE.

That was followed by another huge effort to take the UI native. Now, Microsoft's Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview web site, says: "We're moving Visual Studio for Mac to native macOS UI, which will fix over 100 previously reported issues related to performance, reliability, and product quality. By using native macOS UI, the IDE now works more reliably with macOS's built in assistive technologies."

Announcing little in the way of new features or functionality in Preview 8, Microsoft is focusing on getting the general availability release out the door, with no word on when that might happen.

"In this release, the focus is on addressing top reported issues from prior preview releases and driving forward to a high-quality GA (General Availability) release," said Jordan Matthiesen, senior program manager, Visual Studio for Mac, in a March 31 blos post. "This work builds on top of prior previews where we've moved the UI of the IDE to fully native macOS UI and migrated the IDE to run on top of .NET 6 (enabling native support of Apple's M1 (arm64) processor."

That work addresses some top feedback issues reported on the Developer Community site:

The preview's release notes lists several other issues that were fixed along with tweaks to the debugger, test tools, web/Azure, Xamarin and more.
