Windows (Not So) New?
Windows (Not So) New?
Readers respond to Andrew Brust's thoughts on what the next version of Windows ought to look like.
I've been saying for about three years now that we'll see applications run in a virtual machine and it will just look like an app to the user. They wouldn't know it was virtual. Good to see we agree.

Gee, suddenly it's the '70s and IBM's VM/SP is reinvented to run on a PC with a GUI interface. What goes around, comes around.

Personally, I can't imagine any business putting all of its confidential documents and data on the "Cloud" and depending on Google, Microsoft or anyone else to be 1) available always and 2) trustworthy with the data (that is, not mining it for
their own devices).

Visual Studio 2010 RC Expected
VSM readers look forward to the Visual Studio 2010 release candidate to gauge the robustness of the new IDE.
I'm actually more concerned about stability than performance. If I get through a day with VS2010 beta 2 with less than five crashes, I'm doing well. I keep hearing good things about the new builds, but I'll reserve judgment until I get my hands on the RC.

Beta 2 didn't allow me to do much with any of my existing projects. I couldn't get existing Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications to run without the IDE crashing completely. The SQL reporting viewer isn't even a WPF one! What scares me is that I've got to wait for an RC and rush test/report and pray that Microsoft offers to fix the problems, or we have to wait for SP1.
